Authorities in Papua New Guinea have suspended their search for three men, including an Australian, who went missing after their boat capsized on Saturday.

The three colleagues who work for the accounting firm KPMG were fishing about 25 kilometres southeast of Port Moresby when their boat overturned in rough seas.

A fourth man who was with the group was found on an island on Sunday.

Helicopters, emergency service vessels and volunteers in pleasure craft had carried out a search since Sunday but it's now been called off, after receiving advice from an Australian survival expert.

It's believed the time frame for survival would have expired by last light on Monday.
