Water Police Base in Port Moresby to be Relocated to Konebada

The Water Police Base in Port Moresby will be relocated to Konebada, an area which was originally allocated for the Pacific Games.

Police Minister, Jelta Wong after a site inspection said the area is a strategic location and well suited for the police.

The relocation initiate is supported by Motu Koita Assembly.

The new base for the Water Police will be located to a recreational area.

An inspection was conducted by Police Minister, NCD Governor and the Moresby South MP on Wednesday.

NCD Governor Powes Parkop said the relocation would place water police in a better area to respond to criminal matters out at sea.

In 2015, this facility was established for the Va’a or canoeing Race for the Pacific Games. However, it was not utilised.

Following discussions with the Motu Koita Assembly, the Australian Federal Police will assist the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary in developing it into the Water Police Headquarters.

The current Headquarters is based at Konedobu, next to the Office of National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Office.

Moresby South MP, Justice Tkatchenko, said the refurbishment will complement the NCD’s planned upgrade of Konebada’s waterfront.
