Negotiations to Restore Water Supply into Madang Town

Locals in wards 2 and 3 of Ambenob LLG of Madang District gathered at the Beon road junction to meet with Madang MP, Bryan Kramer and Acting Provincial Administrator, John Bivi.

From unofficial reports, a fight broke out between people at the nearby settlement and the locals following the incident on Tuesday. It is alleged that an unknown number of houses were also torched yesterday.

The meeting today was purposely to discuss with locals how they would negotiate to restore water supply back into Madang town.

Unofficial reports state that the fight stamped from an armed hold-up of a PMV where a man was attacked and killed. This had provoked the locals to retaliate and shut down water supply into Madang town.

At least 3000 WaterPNG customers including business houses, schools and the Modilon General hospital were affected.

Provincial Police Commander Superintendent, Jacob Singura, is yet to receive a brief on the arrest of around 40 suspects yesterday, who were involved in the clash that occurred.

However, Singura said the suspects are some of the settlers who normally do hold-ups and rob villagers and families of Correctional Services officers who travel back from town.

He commended his men for a job well done. Singura also said a number of firearms, ammunition and offensive weapons were also confiscated from the settlers by the police.
