Late Karike-Huhume to be farewelled

Three months after her passing, steps are now being taken to lay the late Susan Karike-Huhume to rest.

Eldest son Philip Huhume told Loop PNG that the late PNG flag designer’s funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 16.

“Her funeral service will be held at 3pm at the St Francis of Assisi Parish at Gordon’s Police Barracks,” says Philip.

“After the funeral, her body will be returned to the Dove Funeral Home until we finalise her burial arrangements.

“The Urban Youth Employment Project, from the National Capital District Commission, have stepped in to design her tomb.

“We are currently in talks with them.”

The late Huhume will be laid to rest at the Nine-Mile cemetery, outside of Port Moresby.

The family has continually been requesting for her to be buried at Independence Hill in the nation’s capital. However, in a recent government correspondence, they were told that it “won’t be possible because there’s a lot of processes to follow and the Government has to approve it”.

“We hope that the Governor-General will come to our aid,” says Philip.

Susan Karike-Huhume passed away on the afternoon of April 11 at the Port Moresby General Hospital.
