The PNG Mosquitoes’ quest to win back-to-back AFL International Cups has started off on the right note after the team overcame Nauru in a hard-fought lead-up match at Dauth Park, Gold Coast on Monday night.
PNG 7.7 49 beat Nauru: 2.5 17. The match served as a good hit-out before the official competition gets underway in Melbourne this Sunday.
The two teams did not hold back as the first quarter was punctuated by some big contests and hard hits, with just a handful of players able to find time and space to drive their team forward.
The game settled in the second quarter as PNG gained ascendancy through the middle of the ground, resulting in multiple goals up forward.
The Nauru side struggled to get the ball past the Mozzies’ strong tall defenders, repelling attacks at will.
The Mozzies’ trademark run and carry was on show along with their frenetic pressure to cause turnovers and win the ball back.
The final quarter saw a massive leap and mark from forward Luke Savere that brought the crowd to their feet, while the Mozzies kept attacking to the final siren, bringing effort and skill that will go a long way to securing a first up win against a tough Ireland outfit.
The Mozzies looked impressive in their new Tribal playing kit, sponsored by Phoenix Housing.
After the match both Pacific brother teams and their supporters came together to enjoy a feast and to get to know one another.
The Mosquitoes now travel to Melbourne from the Gold Coast to begin preparations for their Round 1 match against Ireland this Sunday.
