Port Moresby motorists have been warned to watch out for flooded sections of city roads when driving around.

City Manager Leslie Alu yesterday urged everyone to adhere to the road rules and be mindful of sections of the road, which have continued to experience flooding when it rains in the city.

National Capital District Metropolitan Chief Superintendent Perou N’Dranou has supported the city manager’s call and will be assisting with officers moving throughout the city when it rains to assist vehicles caught in the flooded sections.

“All city residents and Motu-Koitabu villagers are strongly urged to be aware and be prepared for cases of flooding as the wet season sets in.”

He added that a flood warning was now issued to everyone in the city and residents, who reside alongside the city’s main drainage system.

“Be cautious of flash flooding and the anticipated damages to property and human lives.”

“Children should at all cost be discouraged from playing in drains and any flooding area during heavy rain.”

Mr N’Dranou said his men would also monitor the flooded sections of the city.

“This is to deter children from playing on the flooded road and also to deter opportunists, who decide to use the slow procession of vehicles to navigate the flooded roads to commit a crime.”

Assistant director of the PNG National Weather Service, Jimmy Gomoga has also reported a 64.6mm increase in rainfall from Sunday to Monday this week.

He has also urged the public to listen out for any flood, strong wind and tropical cyclone warning from the PNG National Weather Service.
