A VILLAGE agriculture training conducted by the Ramu NiCo community affairs at Bongu village in the Astrolabe Bay LLG of Rai Coast district in Madang province discouraged discrimination of young girls and women in agricultural enterprises.

Ramu NiCo (MCC) community affairs department’s sustainable agriculture supervisor Allan Wahwah, said challenges identified were related to health and physical fitness, literacy, gender favoritism, matrilineal societal values, land ownership, safety and others.

Mr Wahwah said participants were encouraged to value women as important team players and drivers of change and socioeconomic development.

The main aim of the Bongu village agriculture extension training is to enhance farmers’ learning and innovation capacity to organize themselves for more efficient production for food security and marketing.

It is especially complex, given the need for extension services to address the challenges of climate change, food insecurity, gender inequality, and globalization of agriculture. Over seventy participants attended the training. They were from villages Bongu, Sorghum and Yanglam villages. The training was conducted in close partnership with the Madang Provincial Government Department of Agriculture and Livestock (DAL).
