A Papua New Guinea Defence Force officer cadet says winter training in New Zealand has been a challenge.

Nathan Muli is one of five Pacific cadets participating in a New Zealand Defence Force officer training programme.

It's an 11 month course designed to produce competent military leadership as part of a South-West Pacific regional security programme.

Cadets from PNG, Fiji and Tonga are among the intake of 40 would-be officers.

Officer cadet Muli is in PNG where the candidates are training in jungle warfare.

"It's home and I have the advantage over the other Kiwi cadets so I have to push hard even though it's really hot up here in Papua New Guinea, after being [away] for so long in New Zealand," said Nathan Muli.
