There's been another jail break in Papua New Guinea, this time from Oro Province's Biru prison.

According to The National, the seventeen inmates who escaped from the prison on Sunday are mostly remandees.

The provincial police commander Lincoln Gerari says the escapees remain at large and are dangerous.

He says most of them are accused of serious offences such as murder, armed robbery and rape.

They reportedly broke out of the prison late at night by breaking a brick wall in their shower block before using pliers to cut through the prison's outer fence.

Chief Inspector Gerari has appealed for public help in having the escapees turned back in to police or the Corrections Service.

He says any people found to be harbouring them will be arrested and charged.
